UK Jersey Herd KPI Study 2025: Productivity, Fertility and Milk Quality Trends Show Continued Improvement

PAN Livestock has completed its third Jersey herd KPI study, analysing performance data from 40 UK Jersey herds milk recording with NMR. The study provides updated benchmark values for farmers and advisers to compare herd performance against previous studies conducted in 2012 and 2021.

The results show that while median herd exit rates have remained stable at 25%, Jersey cows are leaving herds earlier and after fewer lactations. Median productive life has fallen by 12%, from 1,529 days in 2012 to 1,344 days in 2025, while completed lactations at exit declined from 4.1 to 3.6.

Fertility performance has remained broadly stable. Median age at first calving continues to sit between 2 years 2 months and 2 years 4 months. Conception rate improved from 40% to 45%, and more cows are conceiving by 100 days post-partum. Calving to first service interval reduced from 89 to 81 days, although median calving interval increased slightly to 408 days.

Milk production and quality continue to improve. Median milk yield increased from 5,537kg to 6,022kg per cow per year, alongside higher fat and protein percentages. Combined fat and protein yield rose from 511kg to 581kg per cow annually.

Udder health also improved, with median herd SCC falling from 198,000 cells/ml in 2012 to 181,000 cells/ml in 2025, alongside reductions in high SCC milk samples.
