Since 2019, PAN Livestock Services Ltd has worked with the Rwandan Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) and the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society (RJS), with funding from Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), to develop a National Livestock Database for Rwanda. The database initially focused on the registration of cattle with over 1.25 million cattle registered across >600,000 farms within 14,500 villages. Since 2024, under “the Amakuru ku nka Z'umukamo (‘Dairy Data’) Dairy for Development Project”, data collection has focused on the recording of production events (services, calvings, vaccinations etc) from the progeny of Jersey bulls within smallholder farms.

Meanwhile, the project “Profiting From Pigs in Rwanda: Improving People’s Lives and Livelihoods Through More Productive Pig farming”, funded by the International livestock Research Institute (ILRI), has enabled the National Livestock Database for Rwanda to record multiple-species simultaneously. Cattle and pig data are now recorded simultaneously in the same InterTrace+ database. This 3-year project aims to enable the traceability of imported breeding pigs and recording of their performance on breeding farms across Rwanda. On 3^rd October 2024,  Aphrodis Bagirubwira provided an update on recording activities to the Pig Forum held at the Marriot Hotel in Kigali, Rwanda. This included a description of a pig-specific web application that is being developed to support the entry and editing of data by field technicians via mobile devices.

In the future it is hoped to include other species in the National Livestock Database for Rwanda.
