Through funding kindly provided by Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA), PAN Livestock Services Ltd (PAN) have worked with the Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society (RJS) and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) to develop and launch a national livestock database for Rwanda.
Since 2019, approximately 1.25 million cattle across 500,000 farms have been successfully registered. Following the establishment of premises and cattle registers, the database was expanded to include details of cattle movements (on, off, births, deaths), milk yield and composition, fertility (services, sires, embryos, births) and health parameters (administration of medicines and vaccines). Data is entered by a dedicated team of field technicians via the InterTrace+ online portal and web application using mobile devices. Each field technician has a unique username/password and is able to view/edit specific herds and events. RAB staff are then able to view and analyse these real-time data using pre-built reports within the InterTrace+ desktop program at local and national level.
Each InterTrace+ database is specific to the project needs. To support the growth of the national livestock database for Rwanda, in addition to weekly technical support sessions, PAN developed ‘supply’ functions within InterTrace+ to enable RAB to monitor the distribution of cattle eartags and veterinary medicines at local and national level. Going forwards, PAN hopes to further develop the national cattle database in line with the requirements of RAB and smallholders.
