National livestock database, Malta

PAN developed a national livestock database to satisfy the accession requirements of Malta to the European Union. Since becoming fully operational in 2001 (and EU-approved in 2003) the database has expanded and now includes:

• Bovine identification and registration complying with
EU legislation
• Registration of holdings and keepers for all livestock species
• Recording and management of disease surveillance programmes
• Recording of animal movements, product imports and
border inspections.
• Slaughter line recording and meat labelling systems for
cattle/pigs/small ruminants
• Equine passports: central registration and issuing of
passports by government
• Management of EU livestock headage payment schemes.
• Dog registration: Compulsory electronic identification (EID)
and registration of all dogs

The database provides a framework for recording movement and essential health events for any species of livestock. The database is readily customizable and accessible to a range of users with controlled levels of access. Full recording and traceability is possible for individual or batches of animals from registration through to final slaughter.
