Animal welfare

David Pritchard is an independent consultant in Animal Welfare Science and Practice. He was formerly Senior Veterinary Consultant for DEFRA, UK with over 20 years experience in international negotiation of veterinary rules for EU Trade. This has covered veterinary checks, disease control and animal welfare for farm species during both transport and slaughter. He chaired the Standing Committee for the Treaty for Farm Animal protection of the Council of Europe and was the UK focal point for OIE on animal welfare. He advised the Farm Animal Welfare Council for over 10 years and led the DEFRA animal welfare science research programme. He provided veterinary advice on policy relating to the welfare of farm, sport and companion animals for the GB animal welfare strategy. He subsequently managed implementation and operation of welfare laws by the State Veterinary Service including welfare surveillance.

He has published and lectured extensively on improving animal welfare capacity of veterinary services, both nationally and internationally. David Pritchard is chair of the Advisory Board of the Coordinated European Animal Welfare Network Project (EUWelNet).
